Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
Childhood eye examinations, treatment of amblyopia (lazy eye), and assessment of strabismus.
In children, the visual system matures during the first 7–8 years of life. A refractive error or strabismus not caught before that window closes can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye) that is difficult to reverse.
Recommended Examination Schedule
- Newborn check (red reflex test)
- 6–12 months: first ophthalmic assessment
- Age 3: pre-school screening
- Age 5–6: school-entry screening
- Annual follow-up thereafter
Common Concerns
- Refractive errors — myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism
- Amblyopia (lazy eye) — patching and corrective lenses
- Strabismus — evaluation and surgery when indicated
- Watery eye (nasolacrimal duct obstruction)
- Myopia control — atropine therapy and specialty lens options
Pediatric exams are patient and play-based. Findings are shared with parents in plain language, and the treatment plan is shaped together.
